About the Magna Grecia Tour
On this exclusive study tour all attention is turned
on the mysterious traces left behind by the Ancient
Greeks - you will be drawn into the exciting world of
Southern Italy's ancient history. Who would have thought
that the Ancient Greeks' heyday was not while they were
in Greece but actually in Southern Italy? When Greece
was in danger of being destabilised because of inheritance
disputes, conditions similar to civil war reigned in
the streets. Then, in the 7th century mass emigration
began and thus the Greek colonisation of modern Southern
Italy started taking shape. This brought one of the
most highly developed civilisations of all times over
to Italy. The Romans took over the culture later on
and called the epoch of high Greek antiquity "Magna
Grecia".
In many places, especially in the East, the Greek influence
can still be felt, not only in the archaeological remains,
but also in the facial features and dialects of the
local people. Even today the inhabitants of some places,
for example Bova, Roccaforte del Greco and Roghudi,
still mix their Italian with linguistic snippets from
their Greek forefathers.
With a trained guide you will discover the traditions
of this mountainous foot of Italy as well as the numerous
art and cultural treasures which tell of its moving
past.
We have put together a varied programme that contains
classics like Taormina, Paestum and the bronze statues
of Riace, but also includes out of the ordinary highlights.
